Day 1
Friday 1st June. Glasgow to St Andrews 1,022 miles 16 hours 22mins riding time
Start time 0500hrs
Our official starting point is the Travelodge at Milton on the A82 just south of Dumbarton. This gives us our official starting time in the form of a receipt which helps us validate out SaddleSore1000 for membership of the IBA. From there we head past Loch Lomond and onwards up and over the far North of Scotland past John O'Groats through Inverness, Peterhead and Aberdeen finishing the day in St Andrews after about 19 hours and 1100 miles.Landmarks visited
- Ardnamurchan Point - UK mainland's most Westerly point
- Applecross - UK's highest road (on our route)
- Dunnet Head - UK mainland's most Northerly point
- John O'Groats - Top left corner
- Peterhead Causeway - Scotland's most Easterly point
This is both our longest day and biggest challenge. Take a look at the map, then take a CLOSE look. Apart from a few miles of dual carriageway in the big towns the longest straights piece of road for 300 miles is about 300m and often a 'straight' is the point that joins one corner onto another!

Day 2
Saturday 2nd June, St Andrews to Skegness 420 miles 7 hours 40 mins
A relatively late start is planned after the excesses of Day 1. The run down the East Coast is straightforward and uncomplicated using the A1 past Newcastle and pottering on down through Scarborough, Hull and Grimsby ending up in Skegness by evening for a decent bit of grub and an early night.
Landmarks visited
- North Berwick - England's most Northerly point

Day 3
Sunday 3rd June, Skeggy to Brighton 432 miles 7 hours 45 mins
Day 3 brings us back onto the Landmark trail on our way past the East Point at Lowestoft. The long run round East Anglia will be an interesting contrast to the mountains of Day 1 and is an area neither Alan nor I know very well. After the flat lands comes the major inhabited area of the South East as we skirt London on the M25 on our way to Margate and our next corner at Dover. Finally we skip along the South Coast playing 'Dodge the Granny' and 'spot the driverless car' as we chill out in the fleshpots of Brighton.
Landmarks visited
- Lowestoft - UK mainland's most Easterly point
- Dover - Bottom Right corner

Day 4
Monday 4th June, Brighton to Newquay 391 miles 6 hours 27 mins
A day of rolling hills and sea views. Running loosely along the south coast we're keeping our fun miles for the twisty but busy roads of Devon and Cornwall. As the scenery gets nicer we'll get slower and enjoy the ride. Whilst the east coast will have its moments, we suspect that Day 4 will be one of the more picturesque. We are planning on taking a decent amount of time over the Lizard/Land's End area so we're not really sticking tightly to the coast. A run in and out on the A30 gives us more time at the far south of the UK. Finally a quick squirt up the A30 to Boscastle for pub dinner and sea shanties.
This could be our toughest day with world renowned tourist attractions like the Eden Project making travelling through this area fraught with traffic problems. Time will tell how we cope.Landmarks visited
- The Lizard - UK mainland's most Southerly point
- Land's End - UK's most south-westerly point

Day 6
Dolgellau to Annan 386 miles 7 hours 58 mins
Nearing the end of our journey now with a day of driving through the conurbation of Liverpool, Southport, Preston and up to Lancaster followed by a wee trawl through Cumbria. Frustratingly we will be missing out the hills and passes of the Lake District but time and spirit willing we may succumb to the temptation of the Kirkstone Pass. A short haul thereafter finds us back in Bonny Scotland with our last overnight stop in Annan, birthplace of Mr Alan Hill.
