What, Where, Why?

Why?
This sort of thing is very hard to explain. Just riding motorbikes all year round is tricky to explain to other bikers so doing intergalactic mileages for the hell of it makes little sense to anyone. Official excuses are (in no particular order):

  1. To mark my 40th birthday

  2. To raise money for Multiple Sclerosis Society Scotland and Revive Scotland both of which give a huge amount of support to MS sufferers

  3. To raise awareness of MS in Scotland, where the incidence rate is the highest in the world with over 10,000 sufferers

  4. Because we want to!

What's involved?
We're following the coastline quite closely avoiding big roads and motorways wherever possible and picking up a few landmarks on the way. We're not being too anal about the route as even following the coast loosely will mean covering over 3,500 miles.  That means at least 500 miles per day every day for 7 days.  We're hoping to cover 1,000 in the first 24 hours and then average 420 miles per day thereafter.

Will you have to be riding very fast?
Nope! The art of long distance riding is going at a good pace and not stopping very often.  On back roads it is easy to keep up a steady 50mph and the twists and turns help keep you awake.

So what's the plan then.
Starting in Glasgow (sort of) we'll ride clockwise around the coast picking up the following landmarks:

  1. Kilchoan point - UK/Scotland's most westerly point

  2. Applecross - UK's highest (ascent) road

  3. Durness - top left corner

  4. Dunnet Head - UK/Scotland's most Northerly point

  5. John O'Groats - Top right corner

  6. Peterhead - Scotland's most Easterly point

  7. North Berwick - England's most northerly point

  8. Lowestoft - UK/Eng most Easterly point

  9. Dover - Bottom right corner

  10. The Lizard - UK/Eng most Southerly point

  11. Land's End - bottom left corner & UK/Eng most Easterly point

  12. Barry - Wales' most Southerly point

  13. St David's - Wales' most Easterly point

  14. Prestatyn - Wales' most Northerly point

  15. Drumore Point - Scotland's most Southerly point

So who's stupid/mad enough to this?

See the participants page for more info

Can I join you for all or part of the trip?

Yes, of course.  We're limiting the numbers for the whole ride to 4 but any number can meet up with us and ride along for a day.
